Gerhard Richter

Gerhard Richter is know as:
  • Painter
  • Sculptor
  • Photographer

Gerhard Richter (1932 born in Dresden) is known for his abstract and photorealistic paintings. Despite blurring and abstraction, his works are always concerned with reality. Richter works in various media, painting and photography as well as stained glass. The “Richter-Fenster”, windows of the Cologne Cathedral he designed in 2007, are a prominent example of this. In 2012, Richter set the auction record for a living artist when his painting “Abstraktes Bild” was sold for $ 34 million. He managed to surpass his own record several times. This happened in 2013 with the sale of the painting “Domplatz, Milan” for $ 37 million and in 2015 with the sale of another “Abstraktes Bild” for $ 44.5 million. A total of 50 Richter works have been sold at double-digit million prices. The Art Compass, the ranking of living artists, has given first place to Gerhard Richter from 2004 to 2008 and from 2010 to 2015.

Richter fled to West Germany in 1961, before the wall was built. He studied with Karl Otto Götz at the Düsseldorf Art Academy together with Sigmar Polke, Konrad Lueg and Gotthard Graubner. He was co-founder of the Capitalist Realism, which was close to Pop Art. In 1971, Richter took up a professorship at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, which he held until 1993.
